Remember the BlackBerry PlayBook? Research in Motion’s tablet stirred up quite a bit of hype last year, only to land with a thud .

While speaking at HP’s global partner summit in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman discussed her company’s strategy moving forward, further emphasizing the potential of the now open-source webOS platform . Whitman is already on record saying that webOS offers big benefits compared to iOS (which is closed) and Android (which is fragmented) , and now the chief executive is pushing things a step further. ”I think there is room for another operating system,” Whitman said at the summit according to Channel EMEA .

Taking the stage at the HP Global Partner conference in Las Vegas, Meg Whitman, CEO of HP said she believes that with the Google-Motorola deal now in place Android could become a closed source mobile platform. Meg Whitman reiterated HP’s commitment for webOS and reassured everyone that webOS is here to stay for the long run, especially with the platform in need of around four years for its impact to be felt.

Happy Valentine’s Day, tech world, we’re starting the day off right with some leaks of the newest system released by RIM, BlackBerry 10 in all its glory. Then the iPad 3 tips continue to flow – iPad 3 with 4G LTE , a teeny tiny iPad Mini , and there’s a big tip about an iPad 8-inch iteration which, when combined with the other iDevices, would form Voltron.

While we thought a tasteful retrospective was the way to go, it looks like HP’s not finished picking over those webOS bones. The company has now released the UI widgets for Enyo 2.0 (following its source code release last month ), details on how webOS deals with the Javascript core and a new Isis web browser.

HP’s open-sourcing of webOS continues today, with the release of the underlying Isis web browser along with a governance model and more of the Enyo components developers will need to create their own webOS devices and apps. Enyo has already been downloaded 40,000 times in the three weeks since its release, the team says, and now there’s the Isis Project , “a fast, standards-compliant web browser engine,” to go along with it.

Just one year ago, HP officially introduced the TouchPad, Pre 3 and Veer to its lineup. Much has happened in the 365 days since that time, which marked the end of the Palm brand , the discontinuation of the company’s webOS hardware development and the decision to open source the crown jewel, webOS.
