This Week In The Life Of DROID: 2/3/2012

It’s been a busy week for Android enthusiasts. After a scare from Google and Verizon, we can rest better this weekend knowing that our Galaxy Nexus devices will continue to be supported by Google.

ComScore: Android and iOS gallop ahead, US smartphone usage approaches 100 million

The latest report is in from ComScore , and as you might expect, the news is sunshine and roses for the crews at Google and Apple. Both companies platforms charted some worthwhile month-over-month gains, as Android is estimated to account for 47.3 percent of smartphones in the US, while iOS runs a strong second with 26.9 percent.

How was that for a relatively calm week in Android news? Despite a last minute scare the Google might be stripping of Galaxy Nexus of its Nexus-given rights (thankfully there was another explanation), we managed to make it through without too much drama.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance receives early hands-on preview

The Samsung Galaxy S Advance was announced on Monday , and not even a week later the device has shown up in Vietnam and received a hands-on from Mai Nguyen . The handset reportedly features a design that is a combination of the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus , complete with a curved display.

Smartphones outpace PCs for the first time in Q4 2011

According to detailed Q4 2011 shipment estimates released by research firm Canalys, global smartphone shipments have surpassed that of PCs for the very first time. Vendors shipped 488 million smartphones in 2011 compared to 415 million PCs.

Best Buy offering flip cover case with Galaxy Note pre-orders

Best Buy has announced that customers pre-ordering the Samsung Galaxy Note for AT&T beginning February 5th will receive a little something extra for their interest. Pre-ordering the Note at a Best Buy/Best Buy Mobile store or online earns future owners a flip cover case to protect that sizable 5.3-inch display.

A quick visit to the Android developer support page reveals some startling news. It appears as if Google is dropping the “developer device” tag of once-listed CDMA models.

Canalys: Smartphone shipments surpassed PC shipments in 2011

Smart phones overtake client PCs in 2011       Vendors shipped 488 million smart phones in 2011, compared to 415 million client PCs       Apple was the leading smart phone vendor in 2011, following record Q4 shipments Palo Alto, Shanghai, Singapore and Reading – 3 February 2012 Canalys today released its full, detailed Q4 2011 country-level smart phone shipment estimates to clients, so completing the picture for the year. One notable result was that total annual global shipments of smart phones exceeded those of client PCs (including pads) for the first time.

Apple and Samsung to pull in 90% of smartphone profits in 2012, UBS says

Industry watchers agree that smartphone sales will continue to balloon in 2012, but much of the projected growth will seemingly be enjoyed by just two companies. In a report to clients earlier this week, UBS analyst Maynard Um lowered his full-year unit sales projections for cell phones to 1.69 billion from his earlier estimate of 1.7 billion units.
