Cingular Text Messages Price Hike Starts Early Next Year

December 18, 2006

Bad news to all Cingular subscribers, specially those who love to text. Starting January 21, users will be charged 15 cents per message sent and received. Unlike Sprint subscribers, when Sprint made a similar move in October, those within the Cingular network will not have the option to nullify their contracts. As Mobiletracker writes, ” Sprint allowed SMS users to cancel their contracts without an early termination free (usually around $200) after the price hike. Sprint did not reveal how many customers took advantage of that offer however.”

Cingular has decided to take this step to lure its subscribers to subscribe to its bulk SMS plan, which ranges from US$5 for 200 messages per month, up to 3,000, for US$20.
