Sharp develops worlds thinnest LCD

October 24, 2007

sharpthinlcd.jpg

Sharp has just announced it has developed the world’s thinnest LCD for mobile devices, a 2.2-inch screen at a mere 0.68 mm thick. This will drive mobile devices such as cell phones and digital cameras to become thinner as manufacturers strive to improve portability and offer consumers more stylish designs. As a result, thinner embedded components such as LCDs are also increasing in demand. The increase for One-Seg (terrestrial digital broadcast) compatible handsets is leading to demands for greater visibility and higher image quality in displays intended for mobile devices.

concept Phone: Are You Ready for the Samsung BRIX?

October 15, 2007

samsung-brix-phone-concept.jpg

What an interesting concept! We usually take these concept phones for their “entertainment” value and wait for more credible sources regarding new phone designs and concepts from mobile phone makers.Samsung’s Art and Design Institute recently concluded a 10-week intensive course in Product Design for students. The course wraps up with the students coming up with their own prototypes and concept phones, with the Samsung BRIX emerging as the headturner.

The Samsung BRIX Concept Phone, a modular, full touchscreen multimedia mobile phone, is different from all other phones as it allows users freedom and the option to enhance or improve their most important accessory, their mobile phone, via “brix” or brick modules.Say, you aren’t content with how big your screen is, then by all means, add a brick, if you want to other add-ons and brick expansions, go ahead and do it.

Open Source GUI iPhone Unlock: anySIM

September 16, 2007

While it’s no secret that the open source community has been hard at work developing their version of a software based GUI iPhone unlock, its previous two incarnations (iUnlock and iUnlock Reloaded) just weren’t cutting it. Recently however they’ve announced that the open source solution to unlocking the Apple iPhone is now available. The source code won’t be released quite yet though. You’ll need a bit of patience if you want to see the secret behind it all, but if you want to check the tool out, it’s here courtesy of EngadgetMobile.

Dialing and Driving Safe according to new study

August 26, 2007

Two UC-Berkely graduate students have taken it upon themselves to break from conventional wisdom in announcing the findings of their study. According to them, there is “no match in the evening cell phone use spike and [car] crash data.” Despite the rise in cell phone use, from 140 minutes a month in ‘93 to 740 minutes a month at present, the number of fatal accidents have dropped for the same period. The findings do not, however, give you license to keep using your cellphone while driving. Don’t dial and drive.

All-in One Haptic Concept Phone by Lukas Koh

August 13, 2007

haptic_phone.jpgIf the iPhone, being mostly touchscreen, is impressive as it is, this concept phone will blow it out of the water - if this concept phone ever makes it to production. Both the front and rear panel of Lukas Koh’s concept phone are touchscreens which display different graphic user interfaces (GUI) depending on what function the phone is serving at the moment. Not only that, it also has a changing physical user interface (PUI): certain parts of the phone’s surface can raise to mimic different buttons. With technology advancing as it has in recent years, this concept phone might yet see the light of production day… then again, maybe not. Who knows? Only time will tell.

No iPhone? Make your Own

August 13, 2007

fab-iphone.jpgDon’t have an iPhone? Not enough money to make the trip to the US and buy an iPhone for yourself? Why not make one? This guy from still iPhone-less Japan decided that if he couldn’t have one, he’d make one, even if it’s just a mock-up. By make, we mean actually create from thin air… well, not really thin air. With some basic materials and power tools, the guy creates an impressive dummy iPhone. Impressive, yes, but not the Apple iPhone. :) Good job though.

iPhone paraphernalia: SIM card replacement tool: the iClip

August 6, 2007

iphoneclip.jpgPictured here are tools Apple provides with repaired / replacement iPhones. The technology behind which, needless to say, is mind boggling. Ok, well, not really. It’s a paper clip for crying out loud. But it’s the thought behind it all that’s getting folks in the open source community wound up. There’s an open source project up on Google Code about the whole thing. Do check out the issues list.

iPhone + Freezer = Cold but working iPhone

August 6, 2007

8-3-07-frozen_iphone.jpgSince most iPhone owners purchased their magic machines in the middle of summer, one wonders if any of them have wondered what would happen to it come winter when temperatures drop. Official apple iPhone nonoperational temperature ranges from -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C), which might mean having to keep your iPhone warm all the time or even leave it indoors when its below freezing out. However, because of a few brave men who dared to risk leaving their iPhone in a freezer with an ambient temperature of -4°F (-20°C) for roughly half an hour, we now know that it is usable after exposure to sub zero temperatures. Drawback though is that you can’t use it with gloves, so if you’re planning on using your iPhone outdoors in the dead of winter, either use it quick, or prepare to thaw out your fingers when you get home.
