When the iPad launched in the spring of 2010, the closest analog most users had to a tablet was the smartphone: a device that favored the portrait orientation by necessity. Barring a few fringe examples, most pocketable smart devices still took their design cues from the telephone receivers of yesteryear, whose vertical design was born of the necessity to simultaneously cover both the ear and mouth of a user.

SMS (short messaging service), or text messaging, has been around for more than a decade, and its been used in mass numbers since just after the turn of the century. There were more than 1.5 trillion text messages sent worldwide in 2010, at a rate of roughly 5 billion per day.

Over the holiday weekend, I had a small budget to buy a new TV for my bedroom and maybe a cool something else to go with it. (Was thinking PS3?) I was budgeted to spend under $500 and I wasn’t really sure what I wanted but I know I definitely wanted a TV with WIFI and it had to be able to stream Netflix as well as some media off my network.

Last month, we saw RIM expand the global reach of the BBM Music service it launched earlier this year , bringing BlackBerry users in Italy, Spain, and the UK the opportunity to subscribe. This month, RIM’s got a new version of the app ready to go out, with quite a few new features included.
