Apples and Oranges Do Mix! Orange to Sell Unlocked Apple iPhones in France

October 18, 2007

French laws which state that 1) carriers are required to unlock any phone upon customer request (for a fee within the first 6 months of contract or for free afterwards) and that 2) carriers are required to sell both locked and unlocked version of a handset have, well, laid down the low for the Apple iPhone. Orange will now be selling unlocked iPhones for Apple in france, though for what amount which no one seems to know. The Orange-network locked iPhone is going to retail for €399, so one can surmise that the unlocked version will be even more pricey. The actual amount will most likely be announced before the November 29 launch.

Such laws forbidding carrier-exlcusive bundling of cellphones are not unique to France, so those who still want to get their hands on a legally unlocked (and definitely more expensive) iPhone will probably be able to get one in the near future.
